Straight Outta Compton shatters expectations at Box Office

“Straight Outta Compton” is an even bigger chart topper than initial estimates suggested.

The rap drama debuted to $60.2 million, more than the $56.1 million that Universal, the studio behind the film, reported. That number ranks as the fifth biggest August opening in history and the biggest debut for an R-rated film during the month.

“Straight Outta Compton” cost an economical $29 million to produce, so it is well on its way to being profitable. Receipts are split with distributors, and there are marketing costs to factor in, but “Straight Outta Compton” should have some of the most enviable profit margins of the summer. Its debut outstrips those of “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” ($55.5 million) and “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million), both of which cost north of $125 million to produce.

“Straight Outta Compton” profiles N.W.A, the musical group credited with helping to popularize gansta rap. The film’s depictions of racial tension and police brutality seemed to resonate with audiences still grappling with the aftermath of the deaths of young African-American men Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. It was co-produced by original members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube and co-financed by Legendary Pictures.

The success of “Straight Outta Compton” overshadowed the weekend’s other major release, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” The Warner Bros.-produced update of the 1960s television show grossed $13.4 million. That’s an anemic number considering that the film cost $75 million to make.

 

Civil rights leader, Georgia politician: Julian Bond dead at 75

Julian Bond, a longtime leader of the NAACP who also fought to keep his seat in the Georgia Assembly, where he served 20 years, died Saturday night in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was 75.

A public face of activism for civil rights throughout his life, Bond led the Southern Poverty Law Center and was the first black man nominated for vice president of the United States.

Homeless People In Atlanta Plant Organic Garden, Provide Food For Shelter Residents

A homeless shelter in Atlanta decided that their residents desperately needed access to healthy food – but instead of sourcing our, encouraged residents to grow their own. Now, the shelter is home to a huge rooftop garden planted by the residents themselves, which is expected to yield hundreds of pounds of great quality greens.

“It is important to share and train residents in green technology that we are involved in because poor and homeless people are being left out of the green development that we see burgeoning in our community,” Anita Beaty, executive director of Metro Atlanta Task Force, told Atlanta Progressive News.

The organization, which services homeless and formerly homeless people in its sustainable facility, offers a number of programs to its clients. In addition to its growing gardening initiative, the Metro Atlanta Task Force has a 24-hour assistance hotline, day service center and transitional housing program, among other programs.

Whew I can’t wait til it returns next summer, and just when I thought life after Game of Thrones would be dull!  Ghost gave us a new standard to judge the characters of Empire against; sort of how I was when I first watched House of Cards after witnessing the first few seasons of Scandal (they stepped there game up after House, I don’t care what anyone else admits to!)
