20th officer-involved shooting in GA after 6 hr stand-off with police on Facebook

The question still has to be asked: did he have to die? That has to be asked in every case because at the end of the day it could be any of us or our loved ones.

According to police, a man identified by Channel 2 Action News as Dashaun Shepard told dispatchers he heard gunshots in the 1400 block of Kennesaw Drive.

But “as (officers) were coming up to the location and knocking on the front door, shots were discharged in their direction from that house,” Atlanta police Lt. Jeff Cantin said. “They quickly backed up, took a position of cover and requested additional resources and units to the scene.”

One officer sustained minor injuries in the forehead and arm trying to take cover, police said. He was treated on the scene.

Shepard initially refused to speak with negotiators, according to police. At one point, he sent messages to police through family members.

According to Channel 2, Shepard streamed the standoff on Facebook Live, claiming he was “going to war” and that he was “about to shoot it out with these cops.”

Shepard, a breeder, had as many as a dozen dogs in the home, Channel 2 reported.

“We tried to do the best we could to bring this to a peaceful resolution by talking to the family and talking to him directly,” Cantin said.

Shepard’s sister, Asa, told Channel 2 her brother battled mental illness and that she was trying to talk him down via the Facebook Live.

But in the last hour of the standoff, more shots were fired, Cantin said. Gas also was used in an effort to get the man to surrender.

When Shepard finally exited the home, he confronted officers and refused commands to surrender, Officer Donald Hannah said.

“SWAT officers fired and it appears the suspect was struck,” he said. “Medical personnel responded and determined the suspect was deceased.”

Authorities learned Shepard may have been distraught over a recent breakup. And neighbors told Channel 2 he served in the military. He was believed to be in his 30s.

This is the 20th officer-involved shooting in Georgia this year, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. In 2017, the GBI investigated 95 officer-involved shootings.

GA Governor Deal Expected to Announce Facebook Data Center in Social Circle

As Atlanta becomes the new Hollywood, its only right that the new Silicon Valley begin to show itself:

Gov. Nathan Deal has called a press conference today to announce a new economic development project.

The project is expected to be a massive Facebook data center near Social Circle, people familiar with the matter said. The Silicon Valley-based social media giant’s plans for the server farm at Stanton Springs were previously reported. Stanton Springs is near the Shire pharmaceutical plant along I-20, about 40 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

The Atlanta area has been a hot bed for data center development in recent years, given its stable power grid and fiber internet infrastructure and growing population base. A representative for the state Department of Economic Development declined to comment, and a Facebook representative did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Atlanta-filmed Black Panther on pace to $1B worldwide after record 2nd Week

Black Panther is well on its way to the 1 Billion club.

Having had a week to absorb its record-setting arrival, Hollywood is now sizing up the staying power of Marvel’s latest superhero movie. In its second weekend, “Black Panther” demonstrated an astounding hold on audiences in the United States and Canada, collecting about $108 million and pushing its global total after only 12 days of release to roughly $704 million, according to comScore.

As a point of context, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” collected $773 million in 2014 over its entire five-month run.

Imax, which is playing “Black Panther” in more than 60 countries, said people are paying to see the film more than once, a quality that the biggest of the big movies share. “This movie has very strong word of mouth and a deeply loyal core fan base, which are both necessary criteria for repeat business,” said Greg Foster, Imax’s entertainment chief.

And the euphorically reviewed film has yet to arrive in China and Japan, two of Hollywood’s biggest markets. Strong results in other Asian countries, including South Korea, bode well.

For the weekend in North America, three new movies arrived in wide release, and each struggled to get noticed as “Black Panther” dominated. “Game Night” (Warner Bros.) did the best, taking second place with an estimated $16.6 million. New Line, a division of Warner, spent about $35 million to make the R-rated comedy, which received very strong reviews and stars Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman.

The holdover “Peter Rabbit” (Sony) chugged away in third place, selling about $12.5 million in tickets, for a three-week total of $71.3 million.

That left the expensive “Annihilation” in fourth place, with $11 million in estimated ticket sales. An R-rated science-fiction drama directed by Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”) and starring Natalie Portman as a biologist, “Annihilation” cost Paramount Pictures and David Ellison’s Skydance at least $40 million to make.

Most critics loved“Annihilation,” but multiplex ticket buyers gave it a C grade in CinemaScore exit polls. Had it cost less to produce, Mr. Garland’s movie possibly could have succeeded as an art-house film.

But Paramount, which has struggled badly of late, wants to compete in the wide-release business. “Annihilation” was a holdover from a previous management team at the studio, where a large number of senior executives have quit or been fired over the last year as the studio attempts a turnaround. New managers sold off overseas rights for “Annihilation” to Netflix.

The weekend’s remaining new wide-release film was “Every Day,” a microbudgeted teenage fantasy-romance that took in about $3.1 million and was marketed mostly online. The movie was the first from a rebooted Orion Pictures, which is owned by Metro Goldwyn Mayer.
